Data Protection Paralegal

Elevate is recruiting a Data Protection Paralegal with 2-4 years relevant experience for an initial 6-month contract with a view to this becoming a permanent role, with a well-known national law firm in Birmingham.

The successful candidate will provide data protection expertise and advice, with a particular focus on individual rights and incident response.

Key duties:

  • Provide expect advice on all data protection matters to management and key stakeholders across the business.
  • Act as the escalation point for complaints and queries from employees and clients.
  • Recording and formulating answers to Data requests, complaints and queries.
  • Act as a point of contact for the Group in identifying, recording and investigating data breaches or incidents. This will include carrying out root cause analyses, severity assessments, issuing recommendations and implementing appropriate remedial actions to prevent re-occurrence.
  • Advise the business on data protection-related marketing requirements.
  • Support ongoing improvement of data protection awareness and compliance by assisting with the design and release of privacy awareness programmes, including training (both face to face and e-learning).
  • Assist in drafting, implementing and updating data protection policies, guidance or notes available to the company.
  • Liaise with external suppliers and clients and respond to compliance questionnaires or audits.
  • Keep abreast of evolving data protection legislation and guidance from the Information Commissioner’s Office in order to identify emerging risks.

Essential experience and skills for success:

  • 2 to 4 years of experience in data protection, including:
    • Managing large volumes of requests and complaints from data subjects.
    • Investigating data breaches and incidents of a sensitive nature.
    • Delivering data protection compliance programmes.
  • Experience with creating and delivering communication plans and staff training/awareness initiatives.
  • Able to interact with stakeholders at all levels, adapting communication style to the audience.
  • A proven track record of dealing with members of the public and delivering outstanding customer service.
  • Knowledge of FCA and/or SRA regulations would be advantageous.


  • Law degree or GDL
  • LPC
  • ISEB or CIPP/E qualification would be advantageous.
